Our limited
obstetrical ultrasounds are performed to confirm a viable
intrauterine pregnancy and to confirm gestational age. Our
findings enable the radiologist to make a diagnosis from our
images. It is important to provide the radiologist the highest
quality images possible.
This requires proficient scanning techniques, an understanding
of anatomical relationships, the ability to recognize the
difference between true structures and artifacts, and the
ability to use critical thinking skills when unexpected findings
are encountered.

Gestational Sac
If a
gestational sac is seen but a yolk sac and fetal pole is not
visualized, a gestational sac measurement is taken.

 |
|
First Trimester
The first trimester protocol is geared toward answering four
diagnostic questions:
- Is
it an intrauterine pregnancy?
- Is
it a viable pregnancy?
- What
is the gestational age?
- What
is the gestational number?

Second
and Third Trimester
The early
second trimester protocol is done to answer the same diagnostic
questions as a first trimester study. Late second and trimester
ultrasounds are generally done to determine gestational age.

Multiple Gestation Pregnancy
Each baby is
measured separately in a multiple gestation pregnancy and each
fetal heart beat is recorded.

Ectopic Pregnancy
An ectopic
pregnancy can be life-threatening. If the patient has a positive
pregnancy test and an intrauterine pregnancy is not visualized,
further investigation is required.
